Timing Your Visit for Peak Blooms

Cherry blossoms are fleeting, typically reaching peak bloom between late April and early May. “Peak bloom” occurs when at least 70% of the flowers are open, and these delicate petals only last 4-10 days, depending on the weather. Cooler, calm conditions can extend their lifespan, while warm or windy weather shortens it.

High Park Nature Centre monitors the trees and weather for annual bloom predictions, there’s even a hotline! Local tourism websites often provide updates on bloom schedules and festivals. Be sure to check these resources to time your visit perfect.

Take amazing photos while spotting cherry blossoms

When you see the cherry blossoms in Toronto and the GTA, it’s impossible to resist the urge to capture the magic of the blooms with some photos. Here’s four tips to get the best pictures.

  • Consider the angles: you want to get the most out of the soft pinks and whites from the petals. So if you’re walking through a tree tunnel or a grove, taking pictures of yourself and others from a low angle will make the blossoms your perfect background. If you’re in places with raised boardwalks or higher grounds, they can also bring the blooming trees at your level.
  • Use zoom and macro features on your phone for detailed pictures of the petals. Please, be gentle! try not to shake or hang on to the branches, as these frail petals might fall faster.
  • Plan for portraits: the best light for portraits with the cherry blossoms is soft. Avoid mid-day in the sun, as the contrast is too harsh and with low angles, it will be difficult to get the perfect brightness to capture a beautiful smile. True fans even go prepared with outfits and accessories in pastel tones.
  • Experiment with your options: check the available features on your phone: Zoom, macro, portraits, HDR can help you get the best possible image. And don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles. Parks with large rows of cherry blossoms in Toronto will be great for wider shots, but smaller groves might need you to get up close for that lovely pink hue to fill the screen.
